Twirl Play Room
The Play Room at Twirl, also known historically as the Agama Building, has been a family home, a Doctor's office, and a gallery and studio for nationally recognized artist, Agnes Martin. In its current form as Twirl’s Playroom, it serves as a community gathering space for children and their caregivers. In 2021, Twirl remodeled this area, created new murals and exhibits, and built a magical airlock to make it more accessible. All toys in our playroom are available in the Twirl store.
Weekly classes, Saturday activities, birthday parties and so much more take place in the Twirl playroom.
A little history on the space…
Family Home: The space is historically part of the Espinosa Family residence which lived within its secure walls in the 19th and 20th century.
Doctors Office: After World War II it was purchased by one of Taos’ early doctors, Raymond Hollis, and his wife Ella as their home and office. Together they served Taos’ community medical needs, acting as the first hospital in the valley.
Studio and Gallery: Nationally recognized American minimalist abstract painter, Agnes Bernice Martin (March 22, 1912 – December 16, 2004) had a studio and gallery in the play space room. Agnes grew up in rural Canada and began her artistic career in New York City but was influenced by the New Mexico desert. The Harwood Museum in Taos hosts a permanent exhibition of Martin’s work. Agnes Martin once said, "Beauty and perfection are the same. They never occur without happiness.”
